IBBY Canada is pleased to announce that Dena Seiferling has won the 2022 Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award for Night Lunch, written by Eric Fan and published by Tundra Books. Selected from 142 books submitted by 37 publishers, the winner receives $1,000.
The jury also selected two honour books from the list of ten finalists: Kumo the Bashful Cloud, illustrated by Nathalie Dion and written by Kyo Maclear (Tundra) and Lizzy and the Cloud, written and illustrated by The Fan Brothers (Simon & Schuster).
Dena Seiferling is a highly acclaimed illustrator and needle-felt artist. She graduated with a BFA and a Visual Communications Degree from the Alberta College of Art and Design, where she went on to work as an instructor. Seiferling has a particular interest in illustrating animals to evoke an empathetic connection between the viewer and the animal characters. King Mouse, written by Cary Fagan, was shortlisted for the Governor General ‘s Award for Young People’s Literature – Illustration, and a finalist for the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award. The companion book, Bear Wants to Sing, written by Cary Fagan, was nominated for the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award in 2021. Night Lunch has the honour of being one of the prestigious New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Children’s Books for 2022.

In Night Lunch, a lavish night lunch cart slowly rolls down a city street, illuminated by moonlight and streetlamps. Seiferling’s sumptuous, sepia-toned illustrations, with softly, textured lines, reveal all the nuance of the shadowy nocturnal setting, creating a dream-like atmosphere. The oven’s on and the animals are lured by its tempting smells. An owl chef, with a deeply expressive face, conveys concentration and kindness as he prepares special snacks for his guests, each animal character exquisitely drawn – mince pie for fox, a sandwich for badger and sausages and peppers for the bats. When Owl discovers a hungry, little street mouse cleaner just as he is about to leave, Seiferling’s use of scale and light beautifully captures the tender encounter in a moving sequence of double page spreads. The stunning illustrations bring a richness to the midnight tale that creates a mesmerizing visual world.

Nathalie Dion masterfully renders the journey of Kumo through the use of a rich palette of colours: shades of blue, orange and purple. There is an incredible softnesss to the rendering of the clouds, that are delicately anthropomorphised to convey the emotions Kumo experiences. The reader revels at the richness of representation of the sky and clouds – sometimes reminiscent of Turner’s or Monet’s artwork – along with the exquisite depiction of landscapes and cityscapes, that never overshadow what Kumo is essentially about, an ode to self-confidence and the importance of companionship.
Lizzy and the Cloud, by The Fan Brothers (Simon & Schuster Canada), 2022
One day, Lizzy becomes the proud owner of a small, ordinary cloud on a weekend trip to the park with her parents. As the months progress, she cares for her cloud exactly as the instructions say she should, but with all that love and attention, Milo the cloud outgrows Lizzy’s room. The Fan Brothers show Lizzy’s world with delicate, detailed illustrations starring old-timey white, grey and sepia tones matched with lots of 19th century-esque architecture, streetscapes and top-hatted people. There are also plenty of energetic dabs of colour that delightfully draw readers’ attention to yellow coats and boots, green trees and plants, and luminous peachy-pink sunset skies as Lizzie’s love for Milo cumulates with Milo’s tender release to freedom.
The jury for the 2022 Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award jury was comprised of: Heather Doepner, Programming and Community Engagement Lead at Halifax Public Libraries, Julie Girard-Tarif, Full Lecturer in French and Translation at the University of Alberta; and Joanne Schwartz, Children’s Author and Former Children’s Librarian.

IBBY Canada (Union internationale pour les livres de jeunesse- section canadienne) a l’honneur d’annoncer que Dena Seiferling a remporté le Prix Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver 2022 pour un album illustré avec Night Lunch, écrit par Eric Fan et publié par Tundra Books. Ce livre a été sélectionné parmi 142 livres soumis par 37 maisons d’édition, la lauréate recevra 1000$. Le jury a également sélectionné deux livres à l’honneur parmi les 10 finalistes: Kumo the Bashful Cloud, illustré par Nathalie Dion et écrit par Kyo Maclear (Tundra Books) et Lizzy and the Cloud, écrit et illustré par the Fan Brothers- (Simon & Schuster).
Dena Seiferling est une illustratrice de renom et une artiste textile d’œuvres en feutre à l’aiguille. Elle a un diplôme en Arts visuels et communication visuelle du Collège d’art et de design d’Alberta où elle travaille comme enseignante. Dena Seiferling a un intérêt marqué pour illustrer les animaux afin d’évoquer un lien empathique entre la personne qui regarde et les animaux illustrés. Son livre King Mouse, écrit par Cary Fagan a été finaliste des Prix du Gouverneur général dans la catégorie des livres de jeunesse illustrés et finaliste du prix Marilyn Baillie pour les albums illustrés. Le livre compagnon Bear Wants to Sing, écrit également par Cary Fagan a été en nomination pour le Prix Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver 2021 pour un album illustré canadien. Dans Night Lunch, un fabuleux chariot rempli d’un goûter nocturne circule lentement dans les rues illuminées par la lune et les réverbères. Les illustrations somptueuses de Dena Seiferling aux tonalités sépia et aux douces lignes texturées révèlent toutes les nuances d’un environnement d’ombres nocturnes en créant une atmosphère quasi onirique. Le four est allumé et les animaux sont attirés par les odeurs alléchantes. Le hibou, chef cuisinier au visage profondément expressif démontre beaucoup de concentration et de bonté alors qu’il prépare des mets spéciaux pour chacun de ses invités. Chaque personnage animal étant dessiné de manière exquise avec son goûter: une tarte aux fruits confits pour le renard, un sandwich pour le blaireau et des saucisses et des poivrons pour les chauves-souris. Alors qu’il s’apprête à partir, Hibou découvre une petite souris nettoyeuse de rue affamée. Dena Seiferling utilise les effets de clair- obscur et d’échelle pour capturer l’émouvante rencontre dans une séquence illustrée sur une double page. Cette illustration magnifique apporte une richesse à ce conte nocturne en créant un univers visuel envoûtant.

Nathalie Dion illustre avec brio le parcours de Kumo grâce à l’utilisation d’une riche palette de bleu, orange et violet. Le rendu des nuages est d’une incroyable douceur ce qui offre une version anthropomorphique permettant de transmettre les émotions vécues par Kumo. Le lecteur va se réjouir devant la richesse de la représentation du ciel et des nuages- ce qui parfois rappelle les œuvres de Turner ou de Monet. Le lecteur va aussi apprécier la délicate représentation des paysages et des scènes urbaines sans que cela ne porte jamais ombrage à ce que Kumo est essentiellement; une ode à la confiance en soi et à l’importance de l’amitié.

Un jour, Lizzy devient la fière propriétaire d’un simple petit nuage lors d’une balade une fin de semaine au parc avec ses parents. Alors que les mois se succèdent, elle s’occupe de son nuage en suivant les instructions tel que promis. Cependant malgré tout l’amour et les attentions prodigués, Milo le nuage devient trop gros pour la chambre de Lizzy. Les deux illustrateurs dépeignent le monde de Lizzy avec des illustrations délicates et détaillées en favorisant les tons de blanc, gris et sépia et en les agençant avec des éléments architecturaux, des scènes de rues et des personnages coiffés de hauts de forme dignes du XIXème siècle. Il y a de nombreuses zones de couleurs qui attirent délicieusement l’attention des lecteurs comme des bottes et des manteaux jaunes, des arbres et des plantes vertes et des couchers de soleil aux lumineux reflets rose et pêche tandis que l’amour de Lizzy pour Milo va aboutir avec la tendre libération de son nuage vers la liberté.
Le jury du Prix Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver pour un album illustré canadien 2022 était composé de: la présidente Heather Doepner, Chef, Programmation et engagement communautaire, Bibliothèque publique de Halifax, Julie Girard-Tarif, professeur titulaire, Langues modernes et Études culturelles, Université d’Alberta et de Joanne Schwartz, auteure de livres jeunesse et ancienne bibliothécaire jeunesse.

Le Prix Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver pour un album illustré canadien a été mis sur pied en 1985 suivant le décès d’Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver, une des illustratrices les plus reconnues au Canada. Dans son testament, elle a laissé un fonds de 10 000$ pour créer un prix annuel soulignant le talent artistique remarquable d’un album illustré canadien. Le lauréat reçoit 1000$ et un certificat.

A super fun evening of pub trivia, themed around kids’ books. The opportunity to rub elbows with Canadian kidlit celebs. Great prizes. And of course: the chance to show off your kidlit knowledge!
All ticket sales go toward supporting IBBY Canada.
If you can’t join us in person, please consider making a donation instead.
Will I get a tax receipt?
Yes, tax receipts will be issued for ticket sales and donations.
Will we play individually or in teams?
Tickets are sold individually, but please come in teams of four if you can. We’ll create or assign players to teams as needed.
You may purchase multiple tickets at once if you would like to buy for your whole team. If you’re not sure who will be on your team yet, please fill out your name for all tickets and email info@ibby-canada.org when you’re ready to update us with the correct participant names.
Will the questions be challenging?

Every year, IBBY Canada presents the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award to a Canadian illustrator in recognition of outstanding artistic talent in a Canadian picture book.

The winner will be announced at the IBBY Canada Annual Meeting of Members on April 1, 2023—all are invited to attend.

Chaque année, IBBY Canada (Union internationale pour les livres de jeunesse- section canadienne) présente le Prix Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver pour un album illustré à un illustrateur canadien pour souligner les qualités artistiques remarquables des illustrations dans un livre pour la jeunesse.
Sélectionnés parmi 142 livres soumis par 37 éditeurs, les illustrateurs des 10 livres finalistes dépeignent avec talent et originalité des histoires empreintes d’espoir, de camaraderie, de courage et d’imagination dans une variété de styles et de techniques qui vont captiver les jeunes lecteurs.

Announcing Canadian Titles Selected for IBBY’s 2023 Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities

IBBY’s 2023 selections for the Outstanding Books for Young People will Disabilities list will be premiered at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair on March 6th, 2023.
IBBY Canada offers congratulations to exceptional Canadian titles selected for the list:
The selection committee received 200 submissions from 30 countries in 22 languages. From these, 40 books from 24 countries in 17 languages were selected.
The full list of selected titles will be announced on the IBBY website in early January. After the premiere, the annotated print catalogue of the 2023 selected titles, including publishing information, will be digitized and available to download from tpl.ca/ibby as well as ibby.org.
IBBY Canada received 39 English-language submissions from 12 publishers and 34 French-language submission from 15 publishers. Of these, IBBY Canada was permitted to submit a total of 12 titles. These were:
These titles will be catalogued and included in the IBBY Collection for Young People with Disabilities housed at the North York Central Branch of Toronto Public Library. Researchers around the world will be able to search titles online or visit the library to read the books in person.
Congratulations to the publishers, authors and illustrators for creating much-needed and memorable books about and for children and teens with disabilities.

IBBY Canada Announces Robert Munsch as Nominee for 2023 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award

Munsch is one of 251 candidates in the running for the award, from 64 countries.
One of Canada’s most beloved and widely recognized authors, and a recipient of the Order of Canada, Munsch has had a long and successful career as the prolific author of nearly 100 books for children. His books have sold more than 82 million copies in North America, and have been published in 31 territories and 45 languages, including 20 Indigenous languages and dialects.
Recently, Munsch has celebrated key milestones relating to his best-known titles. The 40th anniversary of The Paper Bag Princess (Annick Press) was marked in 2020, and 2021 was the 35th anniversary of Love You Forever (Firefly Books). This year marks the 25th anniversary of Munsch publishing with Scholastic Canada with the release of Leaves! To see examples of how his books have inspired readers, watch “A Love Letter to Robert Munsch,” produced by a group of students enrolled in Centennial College’s Children’s Media program.

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, established by the Swedish government, is an annual international prize of five million Swedish Kronor (approximately CAD $750,000) that aims to increase interest in children’s literature and promote children’s rights to culture on a global level. The award, which may be given to authors, illustrators, storytellers and/or people and organizations that work to promote reading, is named in honour of Sweden’s Astrid Lindgren, the popular and beloved author who created Pippi Longstocking. National sections of IBBY from around the world may submit nominations for the Award.

IBBY Canada, la section nationale canadienne de l’Union internationale des livres pour enfants, a l’honneur d’annoncer que l’auteur Robert Munsch est notre candidat pour le Prix commémoratif Astrid Lindgren (ALMA) 2022 – un honneur international qui reconnaît l’ensemble de l’œuvre des créateurs de littérature pour la jeunesse.
Munsch est l’un des 251 candidats en lice pour le prix provenant de 64 pays.
Robert Munsch est l’un des auteurs les plus appréciés et les plus reconnus du Canada, il est récipiendaire de l’Ordre du Canada, cet auteur prolifique a connu une longue et prolifique carrière. Il a écrit près de 100 livres pour les enfants, ses livres se sont vendus à plus de 82 millions d’exemplaires en Amérique du Nord et ont été publiés dans 31 pays et en 45 langues, dont 20 langues et dialectes autochtones.
Récemment, Robert Munsch a célébré les anniversaires de la parution de certains de ces titres les plus connus. L’année 2020 a marqué le 40e anniversaire de l’album La princesse dans un sac (Annick Press) et l’année 2021, le 35e anniversaire de Je t’aimerais toujours (Firefly Books).
