Wordless Picture Books from Canada Nominated for the Silent Books Collection in Italy
Four wordless picture books have been chosen to represent Canada in the fourth edition of the Silent Books Collection:
Blue Rider by Geraldo Valério, published by Groundwood Books
Letters to a Prisoner by Jacques Goldstyn, published by Owlkids Books
Wallpaper, by Thao Lam, published by Owlkids Books
Woodrow at Sea by Wallace Edwards, published by Pajama Press
“This international collection of wordless picture books, initiated by IBBY Italia, has been invaluable for the creation of a children’s library on the island of Lampedusa. Due to the ongoing wave of migration and the constant flow of arrivals in many countries, it continues to be important that publishing should concentrate on producing good quality books to help refugee children and their families understand the world.” [IBBY Italia]
This collection is now expanding to its fourth edition. An international panel of judges will compile an honour list from all the submitted titles from around the world. The honour list will be announced at the upcoming Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy. These books are highly valued internationally and will be highlighted by IBBY International.
The collection will be exhibited in three places: one permanently housed at the prestigious Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome as part of their Art Shelf collection; another one as a travelling world exhibition; and a third as the children’s library on the island of Lampedusa.
We are delighted that our Canadian books will beautify far-away shelves and that they’ll be shared by so many others worldwide.
