FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (September 15, 2025)—IBBY Canada, with the support of the IBBY Yamada Fund, is delighted to announce that submissions are now open for Celebrating Young Indigenous Voices: From Sea to Sea to Sea, a writing contest for Indigenous youth ages 8-12.
Celebrating Young Indigenous Voices contest co-chairs Amanda Robinson (Nlaka’pamux First Nations), Indigenous Initiatives Librarian at Yellowhead Regional Library, and Abigail Deck (Métis), Indigenous Intern at the University of Alberta Library and MLIS student, write:
“We hope this contest inspires participation and voices from many Indigenous youth from sea to sea to sea, and we look forward to sharing these voices at the 40th IBBY World Congress. We are grateful to the esteemed Indigenous writer-editors Nancy Cooper (Chippewas of Rama First Nation) and David A. Robertson (Norway House First Nation) for judging the contest and selecting the winner.”
The winner of the contest will be invited to read their work at the Celebrating Indigenous Voices evening at the Canadian Museum of History during the 40th IBBY World Congress. They will also receive all 175 books from the From Sea to Sea to Sea: Celebrating Indigenous Picture Books collection for their local library or school.
The works of a number of finalists, along with the winner, will be published in an anthology that will be shared online and with Congress attendees.
From Sea to Sea to Sea: Celebrating Indigenous Picture Books is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026. The project was initiated in 2016 in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action 12, 13, and 63, and is in keeping with IBBY’s mission to support the right of every child to become a reader through access to high-quality books. The four catalogues feature 175 of the best Indigenous picture books published between 1993 and 2024, as selected by a group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous librarians, educators, and authors.

Les deux co-présidentes Amanda Robinson (Première Nation Nlaka’pamux), bibliothécaire des Initiatives autochtones à la Bibliothèque régionale de Yellowhead et Abigail Deck (Métis), interne autochtone à la bibliothèque de l’Université d’Alberta et étudiante en bibliothéconomie de Célébrons les jeunes voix autochtones : D’un océan à l’autre à l’autre ont écrit :
« Nous espérons que ce concours va inspirer la participation et les voix de nombreux jeunes Autochtones d’un océan à l’autre et nous avons hâte de partager ces voix au 40ième Congrès mondial IBBY. Nous sommes reconnaissantes aux écrivains et éditeurs de renom Nancy Cooper (Chippewas de la Première Nation Rama) et de David A. Robertson (Première Nation Norway House) pour le travail de juge et de sélection des gagnants. »
La personne gagnante sera invitée à lire son texte à la soirée Célébrons les voix autochtones pendant le 40ième Congrès mondial IBBY. Le prix comprend également 175 livres provenant de la sélection D’un océan à l’autre à l’autre : Célébrons les albums illustrés autochtones pour remettre à leur bibliothèque locale ou à leur école.
Les textes de plusieurs finalistes ainsi que celui de la personne gagnante seront publiés dans une anthologie qui sera partagée avec les participants du congrès et en ligne.
D’un océan à l’autre à l’autre : Célébrons les albums illustrés autochtones célèbrera son dixième anniversaire en 2026, un projet initié en 2016 en réponse à la mise en œuvre de l’Appel à l’action 12, 13 et 63 de la Commission de vérité et de réconciliation, tout en restant fidèle à la mission d’IBBY de soutenir le droit de chaque enfant à devenir un lecteur grâce à l’accès à des livres de qualité. Les quatre catalogues mettent en lumière 175 des meilleurs albums illustrés autochtones publiés entre 1993 et 2024, ceux- ci ont été sélectionnés par un groupe de bibliothécaires, d’éducateurs et d’auteurs autochtones et non-autochtones.
