IBBY Canada and IBBY Dominican Republic are delighted to be twinned for 2020-2022, and actively sharing our programs and projects with each other.
In the context of that collaboration, we were thrilled to have Soyeon Kim, Joanne Fitzgerald Illustrator in Residence, “visit” the Dominican Republic on October 9, 2021.
The virtual event was designed for Dominican illustrators or aspiring illustrators interested in learning about diverse techniques for their artworks.
Soyeon Kim is a Korean-born artist and educator who arrived to Canada in 2000. For publishers Owlkids Books, Orca Book Publishers and Inhabit Media, Soyeon has illustrated picture books that include You Are Stardust (winner of the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator’s Award), Wild Ideas, Sukaq and the Raven, A Last Goodbye, and Once Upon an Hour.
In her artwork, Soyeon creates three-dimensional dioramas that merge fine sketching and painting techniques with detailed construction techniques.
During the Zoom workshop, Soyeon shared her biography and artistic journey as well as her most recent projects. After that presentation, she conducted a live session of how to create a diorama with a step-by-step approach including construction techniques, illustration and assembly.
The participants were in awe of Soyeon’s skill and technique.
Following the live demonstration, there was a Q&A session where the participants shared their impressions and asked questions of Soyeon.
Many thanks to Géraldine de Santis and Marcela Mangarelli for the translation of Soyeon’s PowerPoint presentation prior to the workshop and for providing simultaneous translation during the workshop.
Thank you to Helena Aalto and CANSCAIP for the lending their Zoom account and for the technical support.
And many, many thanks to Soyeon Kim—and the audience—for their excellent presentation and interaction. Read about Soyeon’s experiences as the 2021 Joanne Fitzgerald Illustrator in Residence held this October at Toronto Public Library.
