Books for Beirut

Thanks to the generosity of many in the IBBY community and beyond, we’ve exceeded our fundraising goal of $3,000 to defray the shipping costs of 500 books to Beirut to support IBBY Lebanon’s efforts to help restore school libraries affected by the August 2020 explosions. (See an update on IBBY Lebanon’s progress.)

We’re currently reaching out to publishers across the country for donations of English- and French-language books representing the “Best of Canada,” a curated list of 50 titles selected from works by Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award nominees; Elizabeth-Mrazik Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award-winning titles and Honour books; the IBBY Collection of Books for Young People with Disabilities; winners of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Young People’s Literature; works by Hans Christian Andersen Award nominees; the IBBY Honour List; the Indigenous Picture Book Collection; works by Joanne Fitzgerald Illustrator in Residence artists; the Silent Books Collection; and winners of the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award. We are also thrilled to announce that Maria Martella, owner of wholesaler Tinlids, has graciously agreed to manage the books’ receipt and shipment to Lebanon. Look for further updates in future newsletters.
