Appeal for Matching Support

Putting the Celebration in From Sea to Sea to Sea: Celebrating Indigenous Picture Books, Third Edition

With your support, we’ll build on current relationships to support the use of the catalogue in literacy programs and reading in Indigenous communities. We’ll also create resources and activities for children across Canada that promote engagement with From Sea to Sea to Sea.

Here’s what we have planned:

  • The creation of an educators’ resource and activity guide for the third edition, with classroom discussion questions and activities. Developed by Indigenous educators, this free, downloadable PDF, will be timely, accessible, and support the culturally appropriate use of Indigenous books in schools. It will also include activities for children such as StoryWalks®, bringing storytelling outdoors.
  • A virtual launch of the educators’ resource and activity guide for the third edition that will offer guidance on how to use books in the classroom, demonstrations of classroom activities, as well as a Q&A. A video of the launch will be permanently hosted—and accessible to all.
  • Four “live” event readings featuring books and authors from the catalogue, hosted by libraries serving Indigenous communities in Yukon, Alberta, New Brunswick and Nunavut. The engagement of Indigenous children at these events will offer them the opportunity to interact with Elders, authors and illustrators, and books that reflect themselves. A complete set of the 25 books included in the catalogue will be donated to each host library.

Every child deserves to see themselves represented positively within books. Up until recently, there have been very few books that speak to the Indigenous experience and worldview, showing characters who are Indigenous and living “miyo pimatisowin”—the good life.

In addition to this, there have been many barriers within Indigenous communities to access books and listen to creators speak about their work; the foremost being funding.

This initiative presents a fantastic opportunity to provide access for children to see themselves reflected within these new titles, in addition to providing support for Indigenous communities.

We have several grant applications underway to support these activities, and one requires matching funds. We hope you will help us create that matching fund.

Contributions totalling $6,500 will allow us to demonstrate necessary matching support and fully fund a year of activities related to From Sea to Sea to Sea: Celebrating Indigenous Picture Books, Third Edition.

While ambitious, we believe these activities will be impactful. Please consider making a donation either:
