Cover courtesy of Simply Read Books FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Toronto (March 24, 2014) – IBBY Canada (International Board on Books for Young People, Canadian section) is pleased to announce that How To, illustrated and written by Julie Morstad (Simply Read Books, 2013), is the winner of the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Picture Book Award for 2013.
Julie Morstad received her BFA at Alberta College of Art and Design, and produces art for children’s books, CD and book covers, fabric, wallpaper and animation. Her other books include When You Were Small and Where You Came From. Julie lives in Vancouver with her husband and three kids.
The jury also noted two books on their shortlist for the 2013 Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Picture Book Award: Wild Berries, illustrated and written by Julie Flett (Simply Read Books, 2013) and The Man with the Violin, illustrated by Dušan Petričić and written by Kathy Stinson (Annick Press, 2013).
The jury for the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Picture Book Award was comprised of Theo Heras, Children’s Librarian and Author (jury chair); Melanie Fishbane, MFA VCFA, Merchandiser Kids & Teens at Indigo Books, YA Author, and Coordinator Children’s Book Reviews at National Reading Campaign; Allison Taylor McBryde, Adjunct Professor, School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia and retired Children’s Librarian. The jury’s comments on How To:
How To is intelligent. It is a book that is raucous and quiet, active and contemplative, child-focused and ageless. It presents a unique perspective on “seeing” things and opens up all sorts of possibilities. The book is masterfully designed and the colour palette is consistent throughout. The font is clean and perfectly laid-out. Even the endpapers play a role: solid blocks of yellow, rose, blue and green hint at the colour within. How To is whimsical, light as a breeze – a book to look at again and again.
The IBBY Canada Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Picture Book Award, established in 1985, honours one of Canada’s pre-eminent book illustrators. Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver left funds in her will to annually recognize outstanding artistic talent in Canadian picture books; the winner receives $1,000.
IBBY, the International Board on Books for Young People, founded in 1953, represents an international network of people committed to bringing books and children together. IBBY Canada is one of over 70 national sections worldwide. IBBY Canada, founded in 1980, is a volunteer organization promoting quality French and English Canadian children’s literature nationally and internationally.

How To est un livre intelligent. Il s’agit d’un livre qui inspire à la fois l’énergie et le calme, l’action et la contemplation. Il est axé sur l’enfant et sans âge à la fois. Il présente un point de vue unique sur la façon de voir les choses et ouvre toutes sortes de possibilités. Le livre est conçu avec brio et la palette de couleurs est conforme dans l’ensemble. La typographie est propre et parfaitement disposée. Même les pages de garde jouent un rôle : des blocs solides de jaune, rose, bleu et vert font allusion aux couleurs de l’histoire. How To est fantaisiste, léger comme une brise – un livre à regarder encore et encore.
