1989 – Irene Aubrey

Irene Aubrey was head of the Children’s Literature Service at the National Library in Ottawa from 1975 to 1993. The library’s collection was known internationally for its holdings of Canadian children’s books published in both languages from the early 19th century to the present. Irene always encouraged children’s illustrators to recognize their work as art (children’s illustrations have only come to be viewed this way recently), and when illustrator Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver died in 1985, Aubrey chaired the committee to administer the picture book award IBBY Canada established in her memory.
